Vocabulary you'll need

The formats — at a glance.

Seven formats. If you only ever use one, the account plateaus. Mix them.

Reel IG · FB · TikTok

9:16 vertical video, 15–90s. The discovery format.

Phone + good light = enough.

Story IG · FB

Vertical photo or short clip, 24-hour life. Daily texture.

Lowest bar. Phone, no edit.

Carousel IG · FB

Up to 20 swipeable cards. Lookbooks, "5 ways to," before/afters.

Plan the sequence.

Single image IG · FB · Pinterest

The hero shot. Your living storefront.

Highest visual bar.

Pin Pinterest

Vertical image, lives forever. Long-tail discovery.

Verticals only.

Live IG · FB · TikTok

Real-time stream. Trunk shows, openings, Q&A.

Save to Reel after.

Broadcast Channel IG · Threads

VIP-only push messages to opted-in subscribers. Restocks, drops.

A sentence + a photo.

The 2026 truth Reels average ~2.8% engagement on Instagram. Single images: ~0.45%. Video isn't optional anymore — but you can shoot it on your phone.
Authenticity is king

What's in. What's out.

2026 consumers are allergic to AI slop. Print this list. Read it every Monday morning.

What's in (do)
  • Phone photos with natural light
  • The owner's voice in the caption
  • Behind-the-scenes moments
  • Replying to every DM and comment
What's out (don't)
  • AI-written captions with no voice
  • Over-edited, over-filtered photos
  • Generic trend-chasing
  • Posting and ghosting
  • Stock photos of food you don't have
  • AI replies to upset customers
  • Captions that sound like ChatGPT
The big either/or that isn't

Organic is the engine. Paid is fuel.

You can't run paid without organic. The ad needs somewhere alive to land.

Organic IS
  • Your living storefront window
  • Your best retention tool
  • Your permission to run paid ads
Organic IS NOT
  • A sales machine
  • Only product photos
  • A megaphone — it's a conversation
Year-one ratio 80–100% organic. 0–20% paid — and only to amplify what's already working. Module 8 covers paid in depth.
How the feed actually decides

The three signals that matter most.

Adam Mosseri (head of Instagram) named these three publicly in early 2026. Hashtags didn't make the list.

01

Watch time

How long people stay with your content. For Reels, the dominant signal — swipe-past in 2 seconds and the platform stops showing it.

02

Likes per reach

Engagement quality. 100 likes from 1,000 viewers beats 50 from 1,000 — even at a smaller absolute count.

03

Sends per reach

The strongest signal of all. When a post gets DM'd to a specific friend, the algorithm reads it as "I thought of someone."

Translation Lead with a hook. Make content people want to send to a friend. Saves and shares now matter more than likes.
First decision

Switch your Instagram to Business.

Three account types exist. For a Crossroads tenant, the answer is the same every time.

Personal For individual humans

No analytics. No scheduling. No contact button.

Skip.

Creator For influencers

Has analytics, more music flexibility — but no shop tagging.

Not for retail.

Business For retailers ★

Full analytics. Scheduling. Contact buttons. Shop tagging.

Pick this.

Switch in 5 minutes Profile → menu → Settings → For professionals → Account type → Business. Pick your shop's category. Add address, phone, email.
If you do one thing

Set up Meta Business Suite.

Free. Posts to Instagram and Facebook from one place. Unified inbox. Analytics. Setup is 30 minutes, once.

Open the desktop site

Go to business.facebook.com in any browser. Sign in with the Facebook account that admins your shop's Page.

Connect your Page

Settings → Business assets → Add → Page. If you don't have a Page yet, create one at facebook.com/pages/create first.

Connect Instagram

Settings → Business assets → Add → Instagram account. You'll authenticate once on your phone.

Set saved replies

Inbox → Saved replies. Pre-write 3 answers: "Are you open today?" "Do you ship?" "Where are you?" One tap, done.

Install the phone app

Search "Meta Business Suite" on your phone's app store. Use it for in-the-moment DMs. Use desktop for batch scheduling.

First-30-day pitfalls

Six mistakes everyone makes. Six fixes.

Posting only product photos. Account reads as a catalog.
Use the four-pillar rotation. Module 4 covers it.
30 hashtags per post. Reads as spam in 2026.
3–6 deliberate tags: location + category. Module 6.
Posting and ghosting. Never replying to comments or DMs.
The 24-hour reply rule. Module 7.
Ignoring the location tag.
Tag your shop AND #CarmelByTheSea on every post.
Boosting random posts because they "felt important."
Boost only what's already winning organically. Module 8.
Bio that says "✨where memories are made✨" with no category words.
Lead with what you sell + Carmel. Customers and Google both search literal words.
Before Module 2

Three actions to carry forward.

Today

Switch Instagram to Business

5 minutes. Profile → Settings → For professionals → Business.

This week

Set up Meta Business Suite

30 minutes once. Connect Page + Instagram. Save 3 replies.

Every Monday

Read the In/Out list

Until "phone photo, owner's voice, reply to every DM" is reflex.

Reference

Mini-glossary.

The terms you'll keep hearing. Skim now, return as needed.

Algorithm
The ranking model that decides which posts a given user sees, in what order. Two people open Instagram at the same second and see different feeds.
Reach
Unique accounts that saw your post. The honest growth metric.
Impressions
Total times your post was shown. One viewer can rack up several. Less honest.
Engagement rate
(Likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers. 1%+ is good for a small local shop. 2%+ is great.
Geo-tag
The location tag on a post. Pins it to a place. The single highest-leverage free distribution lever for a Carmel shop.
Hashtag
Keyword prefixed with #. Carries less weight in 2026 than caption keywords. Use 3–6, not 30.
UGC
User-generated content. Customers posting about you on their own feeds. Highest-trust distribution there is.
Meta Business Suite
Free dashboard from Meta. Posts, schedules, replies, analyzes for both Instagram and Facebook. The one tool to set up.
